What is FOGGING with plus lens?

Written by Steve LEUNG In Hong and HAN Bossino, Translated by Steve LEUNG In Hong, Edited by Otis S. Brown

Traditionally, the plus lens is prescribed for farsightedness and for elderly people for reading. A normal eye experiences blurry vision when looking through a plus lens.  A myope experiences even more blurry distant vision with a plus lens -- just like seeing in fog.  This is why it is called "fogging".

The main thesis of the site and our book "You are wearing the WRONG glasses" is the use of reading plus lens for myopia prevention.

For centuries, all myopic children have been fitted with minus (concave) glasses to instantly make distant objects very sharp. Unfortunately, this method of treatment for myopia leads to a vicious cycle of myopia degeneration until you reach maturity.

In fact, the "correction" with a minus lens is a matter of treating the symptom while ignoring the cause. The minus lens in fact has this serious secondary effect -- which produces this vision deterioration.

We strongly recommended the use of reading plus-lens glasses for myopia prevention and treatment.  They are to be used for all protracted near-work.

All myopia goes through the refractive stages of +0.25, plano , -0.25, -0.50, -0.75, and during this time the public pays no attention to it until it reaches -1.00D, (6/12) at which time the parent or child recognizes he has blurred vision in his class.

If myopia (-0.50) can be caught at this early state and the plus lens use instituted, then recovery and effective prevention is possible.  By this process, the lifetime crutch of minus glasses can be avoided.

Myopes must have and understand patience with this method, since the effect of plus lens will develop over a period of time. The rate of recovery may take one or two years for complete return of clear distant vision.  It is an excellent idea to wear the plus-lens glasses for 1 to 2 years to clear and maintained naked-eye vision for life.

Even though recovery might not be possible in some cases, the plus lens can prevent further myopia development.  This is the major goal of plus lens application.

FOGGING with plus lens is further separated into "far fogging" and "near fogging" techniques.

Near fogging

Near fogging (a moderate plus) is used to relieve eye focusing muscle partially at time reading, writing and using computer. With mild nearsightedness, near vision will in factbe seen clearly through this lens, or only slightly fogged.

Far fogging

A plus (a mild plus) is used to relax eye focusing muscle completely in distant viewing. The eye is no longer accommodated with such a lens for distant vision.  Tightened focusing muscle must be completely relaxed in order to see clearly.

Myopia prevention with the plus lens has been advocated and used by eye care professionals over the past hundred years.  It is not a new discovery, but it is difficult to implement properly.

This technique for early myopia prevention (and cure) can be found in older medical books.  Because the method is not fully supported by main-stream eye care professionals, the public is not aware of its existence. For this reason myopia has run wild in the modern literate societies due to the wide-spread use of the minus lens.

The best way to act against myopia is to initiate the strong use of PLUS lens at the threshold of nearsightedness.
