A personal note by Dr. Stirling Colgate

The essence of avoiding myopia is using a plus lens (a mild magnifying glass) for near-work before the eye becomes seriously nearsighted.-------------Paul E Romano (Professor of ophthalmology, University of Florida)
( How to avoid Nearsightedness ------by Otis S. Brown )

Dr. Colgate, a research scientist with the Los Alamos National Laboratory, correctly deduced the behavior of the normal eye, and began using a reading plus lens to reverse the effect of a confined environment on his eyes. By doing this, he successfully recovered from a slight amount of myopia (-1.25 ) at vision 0.25 or 20/80.

“Fortunately, I understood most of this when I was studying biology and physics when I was 14. A plus lens substitutes for further contraction of ciliary muscle; thereby allowing the eye focus to remain in the relaxed state of infinity when reading a book up close. I used the glasses for reading. Within several months my eyesight had returned to normal---relaxed state of focus at infinity.”

“Science has progressed to understanding this mechanism of slow adaptation of the relaxed focal length (focal state) of the eye to its average focal environment. A significant number professional people in ophthalmology and optometry have empirically and intuitively come to the same conclusions that near-sightedness is preventable but unsuccessfully attempted, even with the dedication of a life time, to reverse the long-standing orthodox view of solely hereditary and genetically determined eye focus.”

“Only very recently is there a rational scientific explanation for the scientific observation of the developmental mechanism of the normal eye. So now that there is such a scientific basis, let’s get on with the solution.”

“Now l assume that you are young, 8 to 20 years old, have recently (within months) started or gone nearsighted and don’t want to go on with thicker and thicker minus lenses for distant vision. You wear plus lens reading glasses for all your reading or anything up close, and even for some of the rest of the time. You might get a bit of a headache at first ; if so, decide which comes first---the headache or myopia, and adjust the use of the plus lenses accordingly. Monitor your distance vision at least once a day. You will experience the improvement of your eyesight with time. If you catch the start of myopia before the lens muscle spasm leads to irreversible lengthening of the eyeball, then it seems the eyesight returns normal rapidly.”

“I have undertaken to try to explain this because I believe that the condition of myopia and having to wear nearsighted glasses for life is totally unnecessary for the majority of the human race. I believe that the condition of progressive myopia is a grotesque because the bad effect of minus lens on eyes and needless distortion of human physiology, created by our intellectual environment of reading and continued because of our collective denial of that very intellect.”

The paper presents the practical efforts you must make to achieve vision restoration from 20/70 (-1.00) to normal. We all go through the 20/40 to 20/70 stage in the process of becoming nearsighted.

Your responsibility:

Your eyes belong to you and you will be stuck with the consequences if you choose the negative-lens method. Myopia prevention is possible but not easy. It is very difficult to reverse nearsightedness that has been made worse by a minus lens. Our responsibility is to inform you properly about the possibility of using a strong plus lens under your control when you are at the level 20/40 to 20/70 before begin to use the minus lens.

You must eventually decide how worthwhile maintaining normal 20/20 or 1.0 vision (focal state 0.00 to +1.50) is to you. Only you can know how much effort you have actually put into the plus lens use. It is you who must verify that your eyes at 20/40 have changed to 20/20 or even better after several months of intensive plus lens use. The objective facts show that the eye will slowly follow the plus lens, provided the eye is no deeper that -1.00 myopia. And one thing is certain-if you never make the attempt, you will never know whether the positive lens would have worked or not.
